After losing the Yemeni coastal areas of the Red Sea to the Houthi rebels, the Yemeni government, backed by the Saudis, has been trying to adopt a military and diplomatic approach aimed at reversing the gains that the Houthi rebels have made to stop them from advancing to other regions under their control. Militarily, the Yemeni government has been carrying out localized counterattacks against the Houthi rebels to capture some of the mountain peaks around Taiz and close to the Bab al-Mandeb waterway. Diplomatically, the Yemenis at the UN General Assembly are seeking international support by stressing the serious humanitarian ramifications, including 132,000 displaced people, and dangers of Houthi control of these vital maritime straits to shipping.
